Gas Protection Measures: Golf Centre Expansion Project

Gas protection measures | Trafford Golf Centre Project | Geoshield
Trafford, Manchester – January 2026

Project Overview

The proposed development involved the expansion of an existing golf centre, comprising a new three-storey extension, ball store, substation, maintenance blocks, and associated plant and service room structures.

As part of the upgrade works, gas protection measures were required to mitigate ground gas risks and ensure compliance with current regulatory and planning requirements.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to design, install, and verify suitable gas protection systems within a strict construction programme, with all works to be completed ahead of the scheduled reopening of the golf centre.

Due to the nature of the development and the compressed timescale, a specialist qualified installer was required to undertake the gas protection installation to ensure technical compliance, quality assurance, and programme certainty.

Close coordination between the design, construction, and verification teams was essential to prevent delays while maintaining adherence to industry standards.

The Approach

A comprehensive pre-verification plan was prepared prior to installation. The plan outlined the inspection and testing methodology in accordance with CIRIA735 guidance, including defined responsibilities, inspection stages, photographic records, and reporting procedures to ensure a robust and auditable verification process.

Verification visits were undertaken throughout the installation phase to confirm that gas membranes and associated protection measures were installed in accordance with the approved specification. Each visit was formally documented within verification reports.

Commonly Asked Questions
  • Yes, we have several non-destructive test methods including ELD (Electronic Leak Detection) equipment.

  • Yes, all sites from CS2 up to CS6 require independent verification, clarity on this can be found in BS8485:2015+A1:2019 and CIRIA C735. It is important to understand that planning consent is dependent on fulfilling the independent verification process, failure to do so could result in planning discharge issues.

  • Independent integrity testing. There is no other way to be certain that your attenuation system is defect free prior to burying.
