Ground Gas Protection: South Wales Housing Development

Ground Gas Verification, South Wales, 2026

Project Overview

GeoShield was appointed to undertake verification services for a major residential development in South Wales, located on the site of a former steelworks site.

Due to the site’s industrial heritage, a robust ground gas protection strategy was required to support the safe redevelopment of the land for housing.

The Challenge

The development programme was operating under tight construction deadlines, requiring efficient coordination between contractors, specialist installers, and verification personnel.

Maintaining progress on site while ensuring full compliance with ground gas protection requirements was critical to the project’s success.

The Approach

RTEC 5 gas protection membrane was selected as part of the site’s gas mitigation measures.

GeoShield provided independent verification services throughout the installation process, carrying out detailed inspections and testing of joint integrity, service penetrations, and detailing to ensure compliance with the project specification and industry guidance.

The Result

Through proactive site attendance and close collaboration with the specialist installers and project team, GeoShield successfully delivered the verification works within the demanding construction programme.

The quality assurance process provided confidence that the RTEC 5 membrane had been installed correctly and offered the required level of protection for future residents.

FAQs
  • The verification must be undertaken by an independent third party. This should not be the installer or the membrane manufacturer. BS8485:2015+A1:2019 and CIRIA C735 both provide further information on this

  • Yes, all sites from CS2 up to CS6 require independent verification, clarity on this can be found in BS8485:2015+A1:2019 and CIRIA C735. It is important to understand that planning consent is dependent on fulfilling the independent verification process, failure to do so could result in planning discharge issues.

  • On completion a verification report will be provided, this will contain project details, drawings, and photographic evidence of the installation.

“Three inspections were all done by Nigel and I couldn’t speak highly enough of him if I tried! He called ahead to confirm when he would be with us and was prompt, he was meticulous in his testing while also offering the same help and advice.”
